An angry parent is filing a complaint to the Alberta Teachers Association after a St. Albert teacher showed an inappropriate YouTube video to his class.
Parent Steve Claussen says the complaint against a specific W.D. Cuts Junior High School teacher will hit the ATA’s office early next week.
Claussen and his lawyer have requested the teacher be removed from the school and potentially, the entire system.
“We will look at all options available over the next few days as to further action,” said Claussen. “In my opinion, he shouldn’t be teaching in the system.”
The ATA can only get involved in discrepancies once a complaint has been filed either by a parent or the school board.
Claussen previously met with the teacher in question and the principal after a vulgar, sexual harassment video off YouTube was shown to his daughter’s Grade 7 class last week. The teacher admitted he had not viewed the entire content of the age-gated video before playing the clip to his — some whom are just 12 years old.
An investigation has been conducted by the St. Albert Protestant School Board and found the spoof video was inappropriate for that age group.
Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk said he was upset by the teacher’s actions and that kind of material should “never, ever, under any circumstance be shown to any student in our education system.”
The minister also said this is not not a reflection of the Alberta education system.
The teacher is on leave until January.
